Maccy Keyboard Shortcuts: The Complete Guide for macOS

Maccy opens with Shift + Command + C by default. Once the popup is open, you can search by typing, move with the arrow keys, press Return to copy an item, pin with Option + P, delete with Option + Delete, and close with Esc. The global shortcut is fully rebindable in Settings.

Maccy App is a keyboard-first tool. The mouse works, but the app is built around the idea that your hands never leave the home row: summon, type three letters, hit Return, done. This guide covers every shortcut worth knowing, how to change the ones you can, and what to do when a shortcut stops working.

Shortcut defaults can change between releases. Everything below reflects recent Maccy Mac 2.x behavior, and items marked should be checked against your installed version before publishing or relying on them.

How do I open Maccy with the keyboard?

Press Shift + Command + C. The popup appears near your text cursor or mouse pointer, depending on your popup-position setting, with the most recent copy at the top and the search field already active.

That focus behavior matters. You never need to click into a search box: press the hotkey, type a fragment of what you copied, and the list filters instantly.

How do I change the global shortcut?

  1. Open Maccy’s Settings (⌘, while the popup is open, or via the menu bar icon).
  2. Go to the General tab.
  3. Click the shortcut recorder next to Open.
  4. Press your new combination. Press the clear button on the recorder to unset it.

The same pane also has recorders for Pin and Delete, so you can remap those too.

Navigating and selecting items

Inside the popup, arrow keys move the highlight, and Return chooses the highlighted entry. What happens next depends on two settings:

  • Paste automatically off: Return copies the item to the system clipboard and closes the popup. You then press ⌘V yourself.
  • Paste automatically on: Return copies the item and pastes it into the frontmost app for you. This requires Accessibility permission (see troubleshooting below).

Maccy Clipboard also has a „paste without formatting” option in Settings. There are modifier-key variations on Return that invert these behaviors for a single paste, but the exact combinations have varied between versions .

Number shortcuts for the first nine items

The first entries in the list display numbered key hints. Pressing the matching number with the modifier shown in the menu selects that entry without arrowing down. Which modifier applies depends on your version and settings . Look at the hints rendered in your own popup rather than guessing.

Searching: where the keyboard really pays off

Typing is the fastest way to reach anything past the first few entries. Maccy supports several search modes, set under Settings → General → Search:

Mode Best for Example
Exact Predictable substring matching Typing invoice finds entries containing that word
Fuzzy Typing a few scattered characters wlcm can match „welcome”
Regex Pattern matching ^https?:// shows only URLs
Mixed Combining approaches Exact first, then fuzzy fallbacks

Regex mode is the power-user pick. A few patterns worth keeping handy:

  • ^https?:// matches entries that start with a web URL.
  • \d{4,} matches entries containing four or more consecutive digits.
  • @.+\.com$ matches entries ending in a .com address.

Pinning without touching the mouse

Highlight an item and press ⌥P to pin it. Pinned entries move to the top of the list and survive normal history rotation. Use this for things you paste daily: a support email signature, a shell one-liner, an address.

Pinned items are assigned their own single-key shortcuts, shown beside them in the menu. Because the assigned letters can differ from what you expect, read them off the popup the first time you pin something . Press ⌥P on a pinned item to unpin it.

Deleting and clearing

Two different scopes, two different shortcuts:

  • ⌥⌫ removes only the highlighted entry. This is the one to reach for after accidentally copying a password.
  • ⌥⌘⌫ clears the whole history.

For passwords specifically, deleting after the fact is a backup plan, not a strategy. Better is to tell Maccy not to record them at all: use Settings → Ignore to exclude password-manager apps, and review the ignored pasteboard-type options there. Most well-behaved password managers also mark their copies as concealed so clipboard managers skip them, but confirm that behavior with your specific manager.

Why isn’t my Maccy shortcut working?

Almost every „the shortcut does nothing” report falls into one of five buckets. Work through them in order.

1. Another app owns the same combination

⇧⌘C is a popular binding. Browser developer tools and some editors use it, though many apps only claim it when they are frontmost. If Maccy works from Finder but not from one particular app, that app is intercepting the keys. Either rebind Maccy (Settings → General → Open) or change the other app’s shortcut.

2. A macOS system shortcut collides

Check System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts and scan each category for the combination you chose. System-level bindings are processed before most apps see the keystroke.

3. Maccy isn’t running

It sounds obvious, but a quit or crashed menu bar app has no hotkey. Look for the Maccy icon in the menu bar. If it’s absent, relaunch it from Applications. To start it automatically, enable the launch-at-login option in Settings → General.

4. Auto-paste fails but copying works

Pasting into other apps programmatically requires Accessibility access. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, find Maccy, and make sure it is toggled on. After a macOS upgrade or an app update, toggle it off and on again, or remove and re-add the entry, if it appears enabled but doesn’t work.

5. Secure input is blocking global hotkeys

When a password field has focus, macOS enables „secure event input,” which restricts what other apps can observe. Global shortcuts may behave inconsistently until focus leaves that field. If Maccy works everywhere except when a password prompt is active, this is expected system behavior, not a bug.

A sensible shortcut setup for heavy users

The defaults are fine, but a few tweaks make the tool feel faster:

  • Move the hotkey to something closer to your left hand’s resting position if ⇧⌘C feels like a stretch. Avoid combinations other apps already use.
  • Turn on paste automatically so the full loop is hotkey → type → Return, with no ⌘V.
  • Pin your top five repeat snippets and learn their key hints.
  • Use regex search if you routinely hunt for URLs, IDs, or tokens.
  • Exclude sensitive apps in Settings → Ignore before you need to.

Frequently asked questions

What is the default Maccy keyboard shortcut?

The default is Shift + Command + C. You can change it in Settings → General.

Can I use Maccy entirely from the keyboard?

Yes. Open it with the hotkey, type to search, use the arrow keys and Return to select, and use ⌥P and ⌥⌫ to pin and delete.

How do I paste without formatting in Maccy?

Enable the paste-without-formatting option in Settings. Modifier-key variations on Return can toggle it per paste, but check the behavior in your installed version .

Why does Maccy copy but not paste automatically?

Auto-paste needs Accessibility permission. Enable Maccy under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.

How do I delete one item from Maccy’s history?

Highlight it and press Option + Delete. To wipe everything, use Option + Command + Delete.

The short version

Maccy’s shortcut vocabulary is small by design: one hotkey to summon it, typing to search, and a handful of Option-key combinations to manage entries. Learn those, rebind whatever collides with your workflow, and the app disappears into muscle memory, which is exactly what a clipboard manager should do.

Maccy is free, open source, and keeps your clipboard history on your Mac. You can download it from maccy.app if you haven’t yet.
